NEW HAVEN — The New Haven Police Department offered as much as $200 to encourage people to turn in firearms Saturday at the New Haven Police Academy.

Those who turned in working firearms got gift cards in the amount of $50 for rifles and shotguns, $100 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons.

The goal was to take as many weapons as possible off the streets. Police said no questions were asked of those who bring in guns nor will they be charged with illegal possession of the weapons.

The police hosted the event with sponsorship from the Injury Free Coalition for Kids of New Haven and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Program.

Police said the numbers from Saturday’s event were 85 handguns, 38 rifles and shotguns and four assault weapons.

According to Officer David Hartman it was “by far our best numbers ever”.
