STAMFORD — The owner of a Stamford day care center has pleaded not guilty to charges she was responsible for the death of a 2-month-old girl who was left in her care.

34-year-old Nydia Carrillo-Maldonado appeared in court Tuesday. She’s charged with first-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a minor in the July 12 death of Bella Redondo.

The child was rushed to the hospital from Little Bears Daycare after she stopped breathing. She was pronounced dead at the hospital after attempts to resuscitate her failed.

The medical examiner classified the baby’s death as a homicide after finding that she died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Carrillo-Maldonado’s attorney says his client has a “long and personal relationship” with the Redondo family and didn’t harm the baby.
