EAST HARTFORD -- Marco Polo Restaurant in East Hartford is closing its doors, in a shocking move for both staff, diners, and brides.

The Italian restaurant has been in business about 60 years.

Wednesday evening, owners posted a brief message on their Facebook page to announce the closure.

"We would like to thank all of our friends and customers that we have had the privilege of serving," they wrote.

Many people wrote about fond memories there including birthdays, wedding receptions, and anniversary parties.

One woman, Jean Bolduc, wrote a very heartfelt message to the restaurant:

"When I was a child, my parents brought our family to Marco Polo. It was a big deal. I was about 8 years old. I ordered spaghetti ... just one thing ... I didn't want the sauce. I'm sure my parents wanted to convince me to go along, but no dice. No sauce. No meatballs.

The chef came out and with great fanfare announced he would provide me with his chef special spaghetti--only for me. And he delivered unto me the custom plated picky kid plate - spaghetti and butter with a fancy presentation of Parm cheese, dropped from a great height.

Such tenderness for a little girl.

And now, the day after my 58th birthday, this era will end for this wonderful restaurant. Thank you Marco Polo for a delicious childhood memory."

Their last day of operation will be Sunday, August 14.
