DANBURY–The city of Danbury is planning to demolish one of a dwindling number of stone fortresses built more than a century ago by industrial barons across the Northeast.

The hilltop Hearthstone Castle was built in 1899. It has fallen into disrepair and become overgrown with weeds since the city acquired it in 1985.

The City Council endorsed a plan this week that calls for demolishing the bulk of what had been a 16-room, three-story home but leaves the foundation and the first three feet or so of the exterior walls surrounding a public garden. City voters will decide whether to approve the plan in November.
