Swimming – Olympics: Day 6

RIO DE JANEIRO–Michael Phelps won his 22nd Olympic gold medal, and fourth of Rio Games in the 200m individual medley final on Wednesday, beating out Ryan Lochte in the swimming pool.

Lochte didn’t medal in the race, coming in fifth, but does still hold the world record for the event.

This was Phelps’ fourth straight gold during the Olympics, and he has a total of 26 medals.

Minutes earlier, Ryan Murphy, also on Team USA, won his second gold medal of Rio 2016 in men’s 200m backstroke final.

Murphy also won the 100 back, becoming the third American man in the last three Olympics to take both races. Aaron Peirsol pulled off the sweep at Athens in 2004 and Lenny Krayzelburg claimed both golds at the 2000 Sydney Games.

The United States has not lost a men’s backstroke final at the Olympics since 1992.
