NORTH HAVEN — A brief but bad storm and small tornado passed through North Haven Wednesday afternoon leaving some damage in its wake.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-0 tornado occurred, with winds around 70 mph. It moved about 2.16 miles, and the path was about 150 feet wide.
"Wind damage occurred on a line from Quinnipiac Avenue near the Montowese section of North Haven east to Barberry Road. Locations of wind damage included Quinnipiac avenue, Village Street, Fitch Street, Governors Drive, Montowese Avenue by Cloudland, Montowese Avenue, and Nettleton Avenue. On village Street, an 8 by 10 foot shed was lifted about 15 feet up in a tree," the National Weather Services said.
Around 1:30 p.m. a Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for parts of New Haven and Middlesex counties as some strong thunderstorms rolled through. Several trees and power lines came down in the Montowese section of town. Luckily, no one was injured.
Meanwhile, wrecker operator CJ Flinter caught the incredible storm on camera.
"Out of the corner of my eye I think, 'What the heck is that thing over there?'"
He was working at the time of the storm when he saw the tornado pop out of no where.
"I wanted to just get it on camera, because no one is going to believe that I was this close to a tornado," Flinter told FOX 61.
And it was his video that helped the National Weather Service confirm that a tornado did in deed touch down. All because he was in the right place at the right time.
Meanwhile, the North Haven Police Department issued an early warning, right after the storm occurred.
"The North Haven Police Department will continue with high visibility patrols in the affected area," officers warned on their Facebook page. "Although it is tempting to explore the affected neighborhoods, we ask that residents remain home for their safety, and the safety of emergency crews."
Between 1 and 2 p.m. there was also a waterspout over the Long Island Sound. A waterspout is similar to a tornado, but is solely over water.
