MIDDLEFIELD -- If you come to Powder Ridge Park in Middlefield in the summer, expect a bumpy ride.

The ski area is going all-season, an initiative owner Sean Hayes is fully behind. In June, Powder Ridge began spinning its lifts to service downhill mountain bikers.

"It's open for all skill levels," Hayes said. "We have lift service up the hill with your bike and then it's all downhill riding."

Powder Ridge offers and array of terrain. Just like the ski trails, there are green, blue, and black runs for all levels.

"We even have a couple of cross-country trails we are utilizing," Hayes said.

For the truly adventurous riders, the mountain has added the bag jump: a 50-foot-wide stunt pad where bikers launch BMX-style off a 30-foot ramp and land onto a soft cushion of air. After taking the leap, Ryland Parker, a bike park employee from East Haddam, said, "If you want thrills, this is the place to come."

The Powder Ridge bike park is open on Friday afternoons and evenings, and all day on the weekends. A day pass costs $28. They offer bike rentals too. There's an extra charge for the Bag Jump.
