NEW HAVEN – Exit 6 north and south off I-91 on the New Haven/North Haven line were closed for several hours after a serious accident Thursday afternoon.

Connecticut State Police responded to the scene around 1:15 p.m. for reports of the crash, and determined that the operator of the street sweeper lost control and flipped over, coming to a final stop on its right side on Willow Street.

The driver, identified as Christopher M. Ruiz, 36, of Bridgeport, was ejected from the vehicle and then trapped under it. He was taken to the hospital but died as a result of his injuries.

According to State Police, the truck was owned by CSS Industries LLC, a sweeping and pavement maintenance company in Connecticut.

The Connecticut State Police Accident Analysis team also responded to the call to investigate.

The road ramps re-opened just at around 5:30 p.m.
