ROCKY HILL — A serious tractor-trailer accident is causing delays on I-91 North Friday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the accident near Exit 23 shortly after 3 a.m. where a tractor-trailer went 100 feet off the road into a stand of trees, just north of the exit ramp.
Two people were inside the truck. The passenger was able to exit the cab, but he driver was trapped inside the vehicle and was severely injured according to Chief Michael P. Garrahy, of the Rocky Hill Fire Department. It took crews two hours to remove the driver from the truck.
The highway was shut down to allow Lifestar to land, but the left lane has reopened. Traffic was being rerouted off Exit 23 and into Rocky Hill.
Several first responders were treated and released while on scene for heat related complications.
The truck was carrying vegetables. The Department of Consumer Protection has been contacted but is not on scene. They will evaluate the produce that was on the truck.
DEEP is on the scene evaluating a possible fuel spill.
Officials are expecting the cleanup at the scene to take several hours.
