WILLIMANTIC — A man in police custody was found unresponsive in a jail cell early Thursday.

A man was taken into custody on unnamed felony related charges and transported to the police department shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday, Willimantic police said in a statement.

He was cooperative during the arrest, according to police, and no physical force was used by the officers. He was placed in a cell by himself, according to police.

Around 3 a.m., police found the man unresponsive. He is not being identified until the next of kin has been notified, said police.

Willimantic police called in the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Crime unit to conduct the investigation.

“The Willimantic Police Department expresses our deep sympathy to the male individuals family and friends,” said Chief Roberto Rosado.
