WEST HARTFORD -- As more Connecticut towns strive to become bike-friendly, West Hartford is shutting down town roads for the first ever Center Streets event this weekend. Scott Franklin and Ethan Frankel from the Bike West Hartford organization joined FOX 61 Good Day Connecticut to talk about the event.
On Sunday August 28 in West Hartford Center, the town will close traffic on four roads that form a loop around the central business district.
Parts of Farmington Ave, South Main Street, Memorial road extension, and LaSalle Rd. will all be shut down from 9 a.m. to Noon so families can bike, walk or scooter.
There will be food for sale, live music all morning, a bike repair station and a bike swap area.
Here are some safety tips for parents and riders:
- Make sure the bike is the correct size
- Wear a helmet
- Make sure tires are properly inflated
- Carry a bike pump with you as well as a spare tube and tire irons
- Wear bright clothing
- Plan a safe route before you go
