HARTFORD — A new report states that tailoring mammography screening intervals to each patient will help maximize benefits and minimizing harms, according to findings published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Researchers found that women with average breast cancer risk and low breast density should have mammograms every 3 years, while women with higher risk and high breast density should be screened yearly.

However, this recommendation is in direct contrast to the recommendations of the American Cancer Society which recommends that all women should begin having annual mammograms by the age of 45 and every other year, for those with no risk, beginning at age 55.

What’s the right thing for a woman today?  Dr. Christine Rizk, breast surgeon and director of the Comprehensive Women’s Health Center at Saint Francis joined FOX 61 Good Day Connecticut to talk about the recommendations.
