East Hampton police officer hit by SUV identified

EAST HAMPTON - The police officer injured in a Sunday night accident has been identified.

The traffic accident happened around 8:20 p.m. at the corner of West High and Maple streets in East Hampton has put a police officer in the hospital.

Officer Hardie Burgin, 29, was taken by LifeStar to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a motor vehicle driven by Michael Fraulino, 29 of Portland.

The officer was alert and conscious and being evaluated at Hartford Hospital.

The officer was directing traffic around an Eversource crew who were working on a utility pole when a Toyota RAV4 SUV drove through the intersection and struck the officer.

Burgin was carried through the intersection, beyond the cross walk and thrown to the ground by the stop sign.

The accident remains under investigation.
