Suspect in custody after Willimantic home invasion with shots fired led to school lockdowns

WILLIMANTIC — A police investigation caused issues in Willimantic Tuesday afternoon.

State Police say the incident began as a home invasion on Spring Street.

The suspect then led police on a chase, which broke up but was reignited after the suspect allegedly got in a car crash. As detectives approached the suspect he tried to run over a detective with his car, and that detective fired his gun, though no one was hit.

The suspect ran, and police began searching for him and eventually a police chase led officers throughout town. The chase eventually ended on Chestnut and Spring streets, and a suspect, who police said was armed and dangerous, was taken into custody.

Ordro Fletcher, 56, was arrested, though charges are pending.

The investigation spanned three separate crime scenes, sources say.

While the investigation was ongoing, Windham Public Schools put schools in the Willimantic section of town on lock down, including the early learning center, high school, two elementary schools and one middle school (Sweeney, Natchaug, Windham Middle and Windham High). The lockdown was lifted at 3:20 p.m., and students were released.

Classes at the Quinebaug Valley Community College’s secondary campus in Willimantic were also canceled after 3:30 p.m., though the campus was never in lock down.

Eastern Connecticut State University tweeted about the incident, but said there was no danger to the public at this time.
