HARTFORD — An Easton chiropractor who cheated the government out of nearly $200,000 in tax revenue by claiming personal expenses as business expenses has been sentenced to two months in prison.
Paul Carpenter was also sentenced Wednesday in federal court to a year of probation, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and pay a $30,000 fine.
Prosecutors said in the 2008 and 2009 tax years, the 65-year-old Carpenter claimed college tuition for his children, oriental rugs, designer clothing, vacations, and even groceries as deductible business expenses.
In all, he took almost $500,000 in false deductions that resulted in an almost $200,000 tax loss.
He has since paid all back taxes, plus interest and penalties.
He pleaded guilty in May a charge of filing a false tax return.
