HARTFORD— A Hartford man who said he accidentally shot and killed a friend has pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

The Hartford Courant reports that 32-year-old Daniel Morales was about to go on trial on a murder charge but pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a firearm.

Prosecutors said Morales shot Angel Vasquez in December 2013.

Morales initially denied involvement, but when DNA found on a hat linked him to the scene he told police it was an accident.

Prosecutor Chris Pelosi said evidence appears to back Morales’ story. He said the men were friends and there was no animosity between them.

Defense attorney Norm Pattis said the two met to complete a drug transaction when the gun went off.

Morales is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 22.
