SHELTON - The 2016 high school football season opens this weekend and the Shelton Gaels, who open their season Friday at Amity High School to take on the Spartans, are once again in the hunt for a state title.

Over the last two seasons the Gaels have only lost two games. Unfortunately both losses have come in consecutive state finals.

Senior Robert Valeri, who plays center and defensive end for the Gaels, said they use past outcomes as motivation fro the present season.

“Losing those two state championships two years in a row, I really think it's pushed us that extra rep, that extra mile,” he said.

This season Shelton has close to 30 returning seniors to the varsity squad.

Head coach Jeff Roy is betting on depth and experience to hopefully end this season with a win.

"I think we have enough talent to be very competitive in our league and win every game. Every game is going to be tough. I’m not saying we are going to win every game, but we will compete,” he said.
