HARTFORD — In ordering Connecticut to overhaul its education system, a state judge suggests making exit exams a requirement for students to graduate from elementary and high school.
It’s a strategy some states first implemented in the 1970s, as a way to set a standard for measuring student performance. But the exams have been dropped in many places amid a backlash against standardized testing.
In Hartford, Superior Court Judge Thomas Moukawsher proposed in a ruling Wednesday that exit exams of some kind be adopted as part of broader reforms to address inequities in educational programs between rich and poor schools. He ordered state officials to come up with a plan within six months.
