BLOOMFIELD--Friday night kicked off the 2016 high school football season, and FOX 61 kicked off our coverage in Bloomfield as the defending state champion Warhawks hosted the Berlin Redcoats.

The state champions won 36-14, led by star Dex Lawson.

Meanwhile, Hillhouse Academics opened their season in a newly refurbished Bowen Stadium against the joint team of Creed/Career/Whitney. The Academics buckled down in the second half to run away with the victory 35-0.

Friday football started with several afternoon games, including Cromwell/Portland Panthers hosting the Blue Devils of Coginchaug. The Panthers, led by Kristin Sapp on the ground, won a blow out 55-0.

Then on Sunday, several teams including Berlin and Cheshire held emotional flag ceremonies to honor the 15th anniversary of September 11.
