HARTFORD — A former UConn Health doctor charged with stealing medication from the UConn Health Center in Farmington has avoided jail time and instead was granted a special form of probation.

The Hartford Courant reports Hartford Superior Court Judge Omar Williams granted 71-year-old Dr. Micha Abeles accelerated rehabilitation on Monday.

The West Hartford man will be on probation for a period of one year and must make a $20,000 restitution payment. A second-degree larceny charge against him will be dismissed if he successfully completes his term.

Abeles was caught on surveillance video taking medication from a storage room in the hospital.

Moira Buckley, Abeles’ attorney, said that her client’s intent was to provide the stolen medication to the patients of his private practice because the drugs were on back order.
