HARTFORD– Trinity College said they will evaluate the safety of all college-owned residence properties after a deck collapse sent more than 30 people to the hospital Saturday night.
On Saturday night around 11:15 p.m. the top two levels of a three-story deck at a Broad Street home collapsed during a house party, and several students broke bones and got cut up pretty bad. The worst injury was a broken pelvis.
The college released a statement Wednesday:
Trinity College is investigating the cause of the accident, and we are working with structural engineers and home inspectors who are on campus over the next few days to evaluate the safety of all College-owned properties in which our community members are living. The property manager, David Lemkuil of SML Real Estate, Inc., is working with the College to assess the situation. Given the level of due diligence necessary to conduct a thorough review, we expect to receive additional information within the next two to three weeks.
Hartford police investigating the case to determine if there were code violations on the house.
The university owns the property, but it’s managed by a private company. Five people live in the house, and they did notify the college they were holding a party where alcohol would be served ahead of time.
