NORFOLK, VA — A Coast Guard cadet was found guilty of sexual assault Friday and sentenced to one year in prison.

Cadet Michael Shermot was found guilty of sexual assault. He was sentenced to one year in prison and was dismissed from the service by a military judge in the general court-martial.

Shermot was charged on Dec. 28, 2015, and suspended from the Corps of Cadets for serious misconduct the following day.

“The Coast Guard remains committed to creating a culture intolerant of sexual assault, and the behaviors that enable it, and will continue efforts to eliminate sexual assault from its ranks through a strong culture of respect and prevention,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.

The court-martial, began Sept. 12, and was held in Norfolk, Va.
