HARTFORD  — Two police sergeants in Connecticut are going on trial in a lawsuit over an illegal search that ended with one of the sergeants shooting and killing a family’s dog.

The trial of Hartford Sgts. Johnmichael O’Hare and Anthony Pia is scheduled to begin Monday in federal court in Hartford. They’re accused of violating the constitutional rights of Glen Harris and his daughter and inflicting emotional distress.

It couldn’t immediately be determined whether O’Hare and Pia have lawyers.

O’Hare says he was forced to shoot the dog  in Harris’ yard in 2006. The Saint Bernard was playing with Harris’ 12-year-old daughter before being shot.

Harris sued the officers, but lost in a jury trial. A federal appeals court overturned the verdict, saying the sergeants illegally entered Harris’ yard without a warrant.
