WOLCOTT — Community members in Wolcott gathered to show their appreciation for the men and women in uniform who serve their town.

Jennifer Schmid, who organized the event, said she decided to put this together given recent events around the country involving law enforcement.

“With all the bad publicity that police are receiving I figured you know what we have to do something to show our police department that our community is behind them 100 percent,” Schmid said.

Chief Edwards Stephens with Wolcott Police said he has seen a lot of appreciation outside of this event, where people have dropped off food and flowers for injured officers.

“We had people coming in when we had officers injured in other parts of the country they were dropping off all kinds of things for us,” said Stephens. But he said it’s always nice to see many members of the community out for a positive event and showing their thanks.

Kelly Mazza said she’s seen many of her friends in the community being helped by police, so she was happy to come out and show her support.

“A lot of my friends have counted on our Wolcott Police to help us and police in general,” Mazza said. “We’re really appreciative of all their efforts. They put a lot of time into making sure Wolcott stays safe so we wanted to show them that we care about them just as much as they care about us.”

While this was a first for the town, many community members said they hope to make this an annual event.
