HARTFORD — Advocates for domestic violence victims are urging Connecticut lawmakers to pass legislation in the upcoming session that makes offenders more accountable for their actions.
Among the recommendations in a report released Thursday is a proposal to require pre-sentence investigations for all family violence felonies when the defendant is facing prison time. Proponents say such an investigation could help determine the offender’s risk for future family violence and address ways the offender may be helped.
Greater monitoring of high-risk offenders and expanding the number of full-time, family violence victim advocates in each of the state’s 15 judicial court districts are among the other recommendations compiled by the Connecticut Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee.
Connecticut has averaged 14 intimate partner homicides annually since 2000, for a total of 222, mostly female victims.
