Police make second arrest in fatal East Haven crash
EAST HAVEN – East Haven Police arrested a woman they said obstructed their investigation into a deadly crash.
Police said that on Thursday they arrested Sara Montano, 28, for third-degree hindering prosecution, stemming from a fatal crash on Frontage Road on September 14 that killed Gaitana Girgenti.
Police said the driver of the car, Johnassis Melendez, was driven to the northern part of Connecticut to avoid prosecution. After questioning Montano about Melendez’s whereabouts, she claimed she had no knowledge nor contact with him.
Police said she knew about the crash and that Melendez was the driver, and that she also knew that they were looking to question Melendez. Police said Montano admitted she was the person who took him to the northern part of Connecticut, which was captured on an officer’s body cam.
Police said the investigation regarding Melendez is still active and they are working with the State’s Attorney’s office to secure a second arrest warrant for Melendez on more charges.
Montana is being held on $25,000.00 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, October 5, in New Haven.
