Beef sold in Connecticut recalled after 2 local residents hospitalized due to E.Coli

Raw meat.

HARTFORD — Beef from a Massachusetts slaughterhouse is being recalled after testing positive for E. Coli and sickening people in several states including two in Connecticut according to state and federal agencies.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health  and the United States Department of Agriculture said this weekend, meat products sold at farmers markets from the Adams’ Slaughterhouse in Athol, Massachusetts, including veal, bison and beef, tested positive for E. coli. The contamination made two people in Connecticut sick as well as others in nearby states.

DPH has been working with the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the USDA, and other state health departments to investigate the multi-state outbreak.

The two Connecticut residents were hospitalized and have since recovered.  Investigators found left-over raw ground beef from the  two patients tested positive for the same strain of E. coli.

The  Adams’ Slaughterhouse slaughters, processes, and packs beef products for some small producers here in Connecticut. Some of these producers only sell their ground beef products directly at the farm or at farmers’ markets throughout the state.

If consumers have left-over beef, veal or bison products purchased from local farmers’ markets or directly from a farm in Connecticut with USDA plant code #5497 printed on the label, they should verify whether or not the product was processed by Adams’ Slaughterhouse #5497 and is included in this recall.

The raw intact and non-intact beef products originated from animals slaughtered on July 15, 25, and 27, 2016 and August 3, 8, 10, 11, 17, 24 and 26, 2016, and further processed and packed on various dates between July 21, and September 22, 2016.

The DPH said E. coli O157:H7 infection can result in severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, and fever.  Most people get better within 5–7 days. Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or even life-threatening.
