WILLIMANTIC — A suspect was arrested after stabbing a woman in the back multiple times over the weekend.

Willimantic Police responded to a residence at 50 South Street just before 11 p.m. Saturday night. 9-1-1 callers reported a disturbance had occurred just outside of the home, which was initially believed to be a shooting.

Officers located a female victim lying face down and bleeding in the driveway upon arrival. EMTs discovered several stab wounds in her back.

The unidentified woman was rushed via ambulance to Windham Hospital by Willimantic Fire and Rescue. Meanwhile, hospital staff arranged for her to be airlifted to Hartford Hospital via Lifestar due to the severity of her wounds. She is currently listed in critical condition.

Detectives quickly apprehended the suspected attacker, who remained in the home as crews established the crime scene. Angel Mendez Alvarez, 53, was arrested and charged on suspicion of attempted murder, assault, disorderly conduct and violation of a protective court order that was previously granted to the victim.

Alvarez was transported to the local police headquarters, where he was processed and booked into jail. He is being held on a $1 million bond pending a September 26th hearing in Danielson Superior Court to answer to the charges.

Members of the Willimantic Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division were called in to secure the scene and retrieve evidence. They have since opened an investigation and urge anyone with information to contact them as soon as possible.
