BRIDGEPORT — A Bridgeport man currently serving an 80-year prison sentence for the murder of a woman and shooting his girlfriend and her daughter a decade ago has been granted a new trial.

The Connecticut Post reports the state Appellate Court ruled on Monday that the jury that convicted Durante Best should’ve been instructed to consider a defense of self-defense in his case.

Police say Best in May 2006 shot Rogerlina Jones, his girlfriend Erica Anderson and her daughter Octavia each in the chest following an argument with Anderson at their home. Jones later died.

A 12-person jury in 2007 found Best guilty of murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault and a weapons charge in the shootings.
