EL CAJON, Calif. — Police say a black man shot several times by officers in a San Diego suburb has died.

El Cajon police released a statement late Tuesday night several hours after the shooting saying the man had been declared dead after he was taken to a hospital.

Police Chief Jeff Davis said at a news conference earlier in the evening that the man was not armed but had pulled an object from his pocket and pointed it in a "shooting stance" toward two officers. That prompted one of the officers to open fire.

The department released a photo still taken from a cellphone video of the moment and the man appears to have both hands on the object and to be pointing it toward one of the officers.

The other officer had been trying to subdue the man with a stun gun.

Police had received a call from a woman saying she was the man's sister and that he was acting strangely and was not himself.

The shooting spurred protests at the scene alleging police racism that lasted for several hours.
