HARTFORD — Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is threatening possible legal action if one of two regional automobile clubs in Connecticut follows through with its plans to stop providing driver licensing services to non-members.
The Democratic governor said in a letter Monday that AAA Northeast has a contract in place with the Department of Motor Vehicles and is obligated to provide services to the general public.

Malloy said AAA Northeast is supposed to provide 60 days’ written notice of any intention to terminate that contract. AAA Northeast currently offers the service at its eight offices in Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties.
The general public can still get licensing services at AAA Allied offices in other counties. Those offices include Avon, Cromwell, Enfield, Manchester, Old Saybrook, Plainville, Waterford and West Hartford.
Amy Parmenter, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Allied Group, released the following statement Monday afternoon:
“The AAA Allied offices in Connecticut, which includes all offices in the Greater Hartford Region, will NOT be affected by this and will continue to welcome and serve the public – both members and non-members alike. This means all AAA offices in Hartford, Middlesex, New London, Tolland and Windham Counties will continue to provide licensing services without interruption or change. We value our longstanding relationship with the DMV and will continue to support them in every way. Offices in the AAA Allied Region will gladly service Connecticit residents outside our region.
