HARTFORD — Responsibility for the historic Old State House in downtown Hartford is returning to the General Assembly.

Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Friday the Office of Legislative Management reached a final agreement with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to operate the 220-year-old landmark.

Under the deal, $400,000 from DEEP’s budget will be transferred to Legislative Management. Malloy says it’s anticipated the move will lead to a reopening of the Old State House, at least on a limited basis, to visitors.

DEEP had closed the building June 30, saying it didn’t have the financial resources to ensure the art and other memorabilia could remain safe and in a climate-controlled environment.

During the last session, lawmakers had transferred responsibility of the site from Legislative Management to DEEP in a budget-cutting move.
