MADISON -- After searching for hours, Madison Police have captured a wanted man Friday evening that had caused school lockdown, and forced residents to stay in their homes.
Francis Peter Sumner, 51, was taken into custody in the area of Rt. 79. He had been spotted by neighbors in the area. They contacted police who saw him walking down the road. Police said he went back into the woods and eventually was captured apprehended by members of the Regional Water Authority Police in the area of Summit Lane.
Police said around 7:30 a.m. they responded to a call for suspicious vehicle on Walnut Hill Road. The officer made contact with the suspect in a stolen RV . As the officer was doing paperwork he took off on foot. Police impounded the vehicle and started to search for the suspect. They used K9s, a helicopter, several departments including FBI and Homeland Security.
Sumner was taken to the command post where he was evaluated by medical personnel and transported to the police station. He had no injuries according to police.
Police said he was wanted in Ohio for a carjacking with a firearm. Michigan police said he stole the RV that police in Connecticut found him in originally. The RV has been impounded. Sumner also has a probation violation in Missouri.
Police were looking for Sumner all day. He was considered armed and dangerous.
The Madison Police Department is charging Sumner with a violation of interfering with an officer and larceny. Additionally Sumner is charged as a fugitive from justice, and is being held without bond.
