FARMINGTON — About 30 local Red Cross volunteers are on the move, having made their way to various flood-damaged areas in the Carolinas following the devastation Hurricane Matthew left in its wake.
The Connecticut chapter of the Red Cross, based in Farmington, also sent two of their fully stocked emergency response vehicles.
“We’re really down there to help the people, get them a safe roof over their heads,” said Jon Basso, the senior director of emergency services at the Connecticut Red Cross.
Red Cross senior communications officer Stephanie Arcangelo said the Connecticut-based volunteers are in the midst of delivering essential goods to the thousands effected by the hurricane.
“People may not have a home to go to, so what we’re focused on is meeting their immediate needs which is food, shelter and support.”
On the ground in flooded Conway, South Carolina, which is outside of Myrtle Beach, volunteer Joe Apicelli, from Groton, arrived on-scene during the height of the storm on Saturday.
“What we’re doing is setting up shelters, giving them cots, blankets, pillows, food and water,” Apicelli said. “We’re just trying to make things safe for everybody.”
