HARTFORD — Social media’s influence in this presidential election is stronger than it has ever been. Social media is a way for the candidates to get media outreach without spending any money – free media.

It allows voters and news consumers the ability to get new information about the candidates 24/7.

Tuesday, Steve Wolfberg, Principal and Chief Creative Officer, of Cronin and Company, stopped by FOX 61’s Good Day Connecticut to talk about the election. According to Wolfberg, in just 12 months, the country has collectively spent more than 1,284 years reading about Donald Trump on social media.

Hillary Clinton has garnered just shy of $100 million in free exposure via social media, while Trump had $380 million, he said.

But he acknowledged that social media in the election is a new tool and usage is still changing.

“I think you’re going to see people really getting smarter about it – seeing what works, seeing what doesn’t,” he said. “But certainly this year has been a test case for social media and digital media in general.”

Cronin and Company is the largest full-service independent marketing communications agency in Connecticut as well as the state’s “Top Shop” as declared by Adweek Magazine. The agency was also named a “Top Workplace” in 2014, 2015 and 2016 by the Hartford Courant and FOX 61.
