WALLINGFORD–Verizon has confirmed that two customer service call centers in the state will shutter effective March 24, 2017.

The location in Wallingford employs 490 people, and the one in Meriden employs 60. All of those employees will be offered relocation assistance packages to move to another location, and employees who want to explore the area around other call centers before making a decision will be offered travel cost assistance.

Employees who can’t or don’t want to relocate, or can’t get another assignment, will be offered separation packages and help to find new jobs.

“This was a very difficult but necessary business decision. We value our Customer Service employees. They are highly trained, highly skilled and experienced and they will be encouraged to stay with the company,” a PR manager said in a statement to FOX 61. “The key driver behind this decision is to realign our real estate portfolio and Customer Service operations to make the best use of extra capacity in the remaining locations.”
