WATERBURY--Normally, the Morris Reservoir in Waterbury holds 1.8 billion gallons of water. But after a lot of withdrawals, there's a lot less. In fact, the city is in the middle of a two-year drought, according to Water Superintendent Chris Bogucki.

As a result the Morris Reservoir, which provides Waterbury and neighboring towns with water, has about 800 million gallons, or less than half of what it should. Waterbury reservoirs haven’t been this low in 40 years.

“That means we go into our drought response stage, where we go to mandatory water restrictions,” said Bogucki.

The restrictions apply to all non-emergency water usage, such as lawn and garden watering.

There are two things necessary to help lift the mandatory water restrictions. One is simple: the reservoir needs a lot of rain. The second depends on the customers, and how how apt they are to follow the new water restrictions.

It will be at least 30 days before the restrictions are lifted.
