Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Muhanad “Momo” Jawad. He and his family own the shop.

The gunman was described as either a dark complexioned Hispanic man or a black man, police said. He wore a black shirt or hooded sweatshirt and dark colored black pants.e-and-m-smokeshop

Police did not say what the motive for the shooting was, but did say "evidence strongly suggests robbery was not likely to be the perpetrator’s motive."

Witnesses described to police a car that may have been involved, which police later found to be a Honda CR-V recently stolen from West Hartford. Police chased the car to the 900 block of Quinnipiac Avenue where it drove off the road and into a house.

Three people in the car were taken into custody. One escaped but was later found.

"Those detained are not confirmed to be involved in the shooting," said Officer David Hartman in a statement. "Although the two incidents occurred at about the same time, they are not necessarily related."
