STORRS–On Sunday, a UConn sophomore was killed when a campus fire department SUV ran over her while responding to a call. On Wednesday, UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz told FOX 61 that the call the fire department was responding to ended up being unfounded.
Jeffny Pally, 19, originally from West Hartford, was sitting propped up against the glass garage doors on the public safety complex when the UConn fire department received reports that an alarm had been activated. The fire department opened the doors and an SUV pulled out, apparently running Pally over. The driver did not notice until he returned to the safety complex from the call.
Now, it appears that there was no emergency or fire. Subsequently, the firefighters “reset the alarms and returned to the station,” at which point they found Pally already dead.
“UConn is reviewing what activated the alarms, which are triggered both by fire and by heat,” Reitz said in a statement.
Tuesday night about 1,000 friends, family and students turned out to honor Pally’s memory at a candlelight vigil on the Storrs campus.
