HARTFORD - Former Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez had his corruption convictions formally thrown out, but he's far from being in the clear.

Perez was convicted in 2010 on extortion and bribery charges. He was sentenced to three years in prison but remained free pending appeal.

In July, the state's highest court upheld a lower court ruling that state prosecutors improperly combined two cases against Perez into a single trial.

Perez was in a courtroom on Wednesday to have the convictions officially vacated. Prosecutors say they intend to push forward with a new trial. Perez is due back in court Nov. 14.

Perez, a Democrat who was mayor from 2001 to 2010, was found guilty of accepting a contractor's bribe of home improvements and trying to extort $100,000 from a developer.
