EAST HARTFORD–A man who officials say intentionally downed a small plane did not die from the crash impact.

Feras Freitekh, who was a student pilot from the American Flight Academy, died from smoke inhalation and thermal, or heat, injuries sustained in the fire that erupted after the crash, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Federal authorities have said that the October 11 crash right outside the Pratt & Whitney campus in East Hartford was suicide, not an act of terrorism, but it was intentional.

Arian Prevalla, the instructor pilot who was in the plane, suffered injuries from the crash but survived.
