MANCHESTER — Police are investigating an accident where a police officer was struck by a car on Main Street Saturday evening.

The officer was assisting at a traffic stop and was struck while crossing the road at  8:04 p.m.  The accident happened at Main and Wells Street near Carter Chevrolet, according to police.

Police said the officer’s injuries  were not life threatening and he is in stable condition at Hartford Hospital. He was conscious at the time.

Police said the operator of the vehicle was uninjured and is cooperating with the investigation. Police said it does not appear speed or impairment are factors in the collision. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information should call 860-643-3325.

Shortly after the accident, according to fire department officials, a driver hit a pole and a car about a half mile away and hid in the woods nearby until he was captured.
