NEWINGTON--About two dozen dogs have found a new lease on life following the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew.

The hurricane slammed the Southeast, causing widespread flooding in the Carolinas and Georgia, and leading to thousands of evacuations. When people evacuated, many were forced to stay in hotels where pets were not permitted, so many pets had to be dropped at already-full shelters.

The shelter dogs already living in those hard-hit areas were left with no where to go, which is where the Connecticut Humane Society comes in. The non-profit brought 23 of those dogs up to live in Newington.

At least five of the dogs--Lucky Sue, Boe, Fredo, Sasha and Margo--have heartworm, and the Humane Society is raising money to pay for their care. Some of the dogs will go up for adoption when they are healthy. Others will be reunited with their owners when they can go back home.

So far, only one is available for adoption. Princess is a 1-year-old Mountain Cur-Chihuahua mix. You can learn more about her here.
