NEW HAVEN - Police are looking into what led to a double shooting at a gas station in New Haven Monday evening.

At around 7:30 p.m., first-responders were called to the Hess Gas Station at the intersection of Ferry and State streets. Police said they found Akeem Witley, 25, of New Haven, shot in the leg and stomach, on the Ferry Street bridge near the gas station.  He was conscious and alert and spoke with investigators.

In  the doorway to the gas station attendant’s booth, police said they found Labian McKnight, 31, of New Haven, shot in the back and shoulder. He was unable to speak with poliec and was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital hospital, where he is in critical condition Yale New Haven Hospital. Whitley's injuries aren't considered life-threatening.

Police said one of the victims said that he and the other victim shot each other during a robbery attempt, but that hasn't yet been confirmed by investigators. They are reviewing surveillance video and speaking to witnesses, one of whom said a silver or gray Chrysler 300M took off from the scene on State Street towards Hamden Street after the shooting, though it's not known if that car is involved in any way.

Police said they recovered two handguns, one on the bridge near the location Witley was found and the other at the gas station booth where McKnight was found.

Police said an Acura TSX owned and driven by Witley, was towed as evidence to the police garage. Police said Witley tried to get away and crashed into a van on the bridge. The van driver wasn’t injured or otherwise involved
