HARTFORD -- Four years ago, a late season hurricane became one of the most costly in our nation's history.

The storm that eventually became Hurricane Sandy formed in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22. It quickly strengthened, and was upgraded to Tropical Storm Sandy in just six hours. Two days later, it became a hurricane. It caused damage in Cuba and Jamaica as it moved north.

It moved up the eastern seaboard and made landfall in New Jersey on October 29. The storm caused major damage in the tri-state area with many tunnels flooded in New York City.

Damage in Connecticut ran about $500 million. Four people died as a result of the storm. More than 600,000 customers were without power in the state, and some did not see it restored for more than a week.

It was the second most costly storm in U.S. history, after Hurricane Katrina.
