HARTFORD — Need a lift?

Connecticut ride-sharing app users now have a new option: Lyft.  Until Thursday, Uber was the only ride-sharing app operating in the state.

“Anyone and everyone in Connecticut will be able to get a safe and affordable ride with the download of an app,” said a Lyft spokesperson. “Wherever you’re headed, you can count on Lyft in minutes! Need a quick ride to Metro-North to dash into the city? We have you covered. The Lyft app matches you with local drivers at the tap of a button.”

Both apps work very similarly.

You open the app and tap request, choosing either “Lyft” or “Lyft Plus” if you need a larger vehicle to accommodate more people. Uber also offers two sizes for rides, calling the larger option “Uber XL.”

Next, you get picked up by the driver. Both companies ask that drivers display who they are working for on one of the car windows, so you can confirm it’s the right driver.

Finally, when the ride ends, you pay and rate your driver through your phone.

To celebrate the launch, new passengers will be able to use the code “CTLOVE” to receive $5 off their first Lyft ride anywhere in Connecticut. The company is also launching services to and from Tweed New Haven Airport and Bradley International Airport.

Lyft says it is available in more than 200 cities. Uber boasts that they are available in about 300 cities.
