Connecticut State Police said Lawrence Bourque, 24, of Stafford, hit a telephone pole on 9th District Road, between Pinny and Hutton roads in Somers around 5:30 a.m.
They said Bourque was the only occupant of the car and was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries where he later died.
The road was closed for an extended period but has since reopened.
The accident is under investigation.
