HARTFORD -- Connecticut Republicans again have their sights on winning control of the Senate.

They need to win four seats to regain the majority for the first time since 1996. Democrats currently control the 36-member chamber by a margin of 21-to-15 seats.

Like two years ago, when the GOP also thought it had a chance to win control, various independent groups are spending thousands of dollars to influence a handful of Senate races. A political action committee created by Trumbull First Selectman Tim Herbst has begun running an online ad that targets Democratic Sen. Mae Flexer.

Senate President Martin Looney, a Democrat, says he's very confident his incumbent senators will keep their seats.

Only two of the 36 senators — one Democrat and one Republican — are not seeking re-election.
