LOS ANGELES–Legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen has died at the age of 82, according to his family.

The Canadian singer, who was inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, was best known for his song “Hallelujah,” which was released on his studio album “Various Positions” in 1984, but his entire works of art — from songs, to poetry, novels, television and film — are renowned around the world.

The gravelly-voiced singer-songwriter is also known for ”Suzanne” and “Bird on a Wire.” He is renowned for blending folk music with a darker, sexual edge that won him fans around the world and among fellow musicians, like Bob Dylan and R.E.M.

He remained wildly popular into his 80s, touring as recently as earlier this year and releasing a new album just last month.

His “Hallelujah” became a cult hit when it was covered by musician Jeff Buckley in 1994, and has become a modern standard since.

A statement on his official Facebook page said:

It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away.
We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries.

A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.
