BRANFORD – Police said they are investigating a shooting that happened outside of a popular restaurant in Branford early Saturday morning.

The shooting that occurred in the parking lot of Eli’s On the Hill around 1:30 a.m. was “accidental,” police said.

Police said a person had been shot and then driven to the hospital. The driver of the car was told by a dispatcher to stop in East Haven so paramedics could begin immediate medical treatment.

Police were able to interview the victim and other witnesses who said that the shooting occurred in the rear parking lot at 624 West Main Street in Branford.

Stephen Kasperzyk, 24, of East Haven was in the parking lot with two of his friends. At some point, one of Kasperzyk’s friends was trying to give him his gun that had been stored in a car and, during the exchange, the weapon was fired, hitting him in the shoulder.

Police sad the incident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
